Participation of National Team of Russia on the 22nd Summer Deaflympics in Sofia (Bulgaria)
From July 26 to August 05, 2013 in the city of Sofia (Bulgaria) the 22nd Summer Deaflympics – the oldest sports competitions of the Deaf which are held since 1924, separately from Paralympic Games (among other categories of Persons with Disability) will take place. Their separate holding is caused by that deaf athletes hold the competitions in full accordance with rules of the International Sports Federations for ordinary athletes while Paralympians compete by the special rules developed for this or that degree of disability. The only medical restriction for the deaf is hearing loss not less than 55 dB in the best ear.
For the first time the Soviet athletes took part in these prestigious competitions in far 1957, and since 1993 in them the national team of the Russian Federation acts. On Winter Deaflympics Russians steadily took the first places in an informal team competition, and on Summer – the second. On the last 2009 Taipei Deaflympics Russians won first place for the first time in an informal team competition, having won in total 29 gold, 41 silver and 28 bronze medals and showed the best result for all history of the performances on Deaflympics.
In the forthcoming 22nd Summer Deaflympics in Sofia participation about 4000 athletes from more than 90 countries of the world is expected. In the program of Games will competition on 19 sports.
The Russian athletes will compete in all events of the program: Free style and Greco-Roman Wrestling, Badminton, Bowling, Basketball (men and women), Volleyball (men and women), Beach Volleyball (men and women), Cycling (Road and MTB), Handball (men), Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Shooting, Athletics, Table tennis, Swimming, Orienteering, Tennis, Football (men and women).
The Government of the Russian Federation represented by the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation assumed all expenses for sending and equipment of members of National team of Russia.
Solemn send-off of Russian National Team for 22nd Summer Deaflympics will take place in Hall of Glory of the Museum of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 on Poklonnaya Hill on 19 July 2013 at 12.00 hrs. Representatives of Office of President of the Russian Federation, the Government of the Russian Federation, Federation Council of Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, State Duma of Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Olympic committee of Russia, Paralympic Committee of Russia, famous athletes and public figures of Russia will address deaf athletes.
